Cornmeal Yeast Bread Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/3 c sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 (.25 oz) packages active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c warm water (110 degrees F to 115 degrees F)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 c butter or margarine, melted
  • 3/4 c milk
  • 3/4 c cornmeal
  • 3 1/2 c all-purpose flour

Directions
  • Step #1 In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
  • Step #2 Add milk, sugar, butter, egg, cornmeal & salt.
  • Step #3 Beat in 1-1/2 c flour until smooth.
  • Step #4 Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Step #5 Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth & elastic, about 6-8 mins.
  • Step #6 Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top.
  • Step #7 Cover & let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 45 mins.
  • Step #8 Punch dough down.
  • Step #9 Divide in half & shape into two loaves.
  • Step #10 Place in greased 8-in.
  • Step #11 x 4-in.
  • Step #12 x 2-in.
  • Step #13 loaf pans.
  • Step #14 Cover & let rise until doubled, about 30 mins.
  • Step #15 Bake at 350 degrees F for 35-40 mins or until golden brown.
  • Step #16 Remove from pans to cool on wire racks.
