Maple Sausage And Waffle Casserole Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/4 c maple syrup .
  • 1/8 tsp pepper .
  • 12 oz breakfast maple sausage, crumbled .
  • 6 large eggs .
  • 6-8 frozen waffles .
  • unsalted butter (for dish) .
  • 1/4 tsp salt .
  • 1 1/2 c cheddar cheese, shredded .
  • 1 1/4 c whole milk or low-fat milk

Directions
  • Step #1 Heat oven to 350°.
  • Step #2 Arrange waffles in single layer on baking sheet.
  • Step #3 Bake until crisp, about 10-mins per side.
  • Step #4 Brown sausage in non-stick skillet over med-heat/flame, breaking it apart with spoon, 8-10 mins.
  • Step #5 Drain on paper towel-lined plate.
  • Step #6 Butter 8-inch square baking dish.
  • Step #7 Add half of waffles in single layer.
  • Step #8 (It's ok to break some to fit into corners if needed).
  • Step #9 Add half of sausage & 1/2 c cheese.
  • Step #10 Repeat layering of waffles, sausage, & 1/2 c of cheese.
  • Step #11 Whisk eggs, maple syrup, milk, salt, & pepper in medium bowl until mixd.
  • Step #12 Pour egg mixture evenly over casserole.
  • Step #13 Cover up with plastic wrap & place weights on top.
  • Step #14 (you can put another square baking dish on top & then weight with heavy canned goods or place a couple one lb boxes of sugar on the plastic wrap & top this with a cast-iron pan.
  • Step #15 ).
  • Step #16 Refrigerate for at least 1 hr or overnight.
  • Step #17 Adjust oven rack to middle position & heat oven to 325°.
  • Step #18 Let casserole stand at about room temp for 20 mins.
  • Step #19 Uncover casserole & sprinkle remaining 1/2 c cheese over top.
  • Step #20 Bake until edges & center are puffed, 45 to 50 mins.
  • Step #21 Cool 5 mins.
  • Step #22 Cut into pieces & serve.
