Apple Turnovers Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour .
  • 3 tbsps sugar, plus .
  • 1 pinch kosher salt .
  • 3 tbsps dried cherries .
  • 1 tbsp water, for egg wash .
  • 3 tbsps freshly squeezed orange juice .
  • 1 egg, beaten with .
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, defrosted .
  • 1 1/4 lbs tart apples, such as Empire (3 apples) or granny smith apples (3 apples) .
  • extra sugar, to sprinkle on top .
  • 1 tsp grated orange zest .
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg .
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

Directions
  • Step #1 Preheat the oven to 400F degrees F.
  • Step #2 Combine the orange zest & orange juice in a bowl.
  • Step #3 Peel, quarter, & core the apples & then cut them in 3/4-inch dice.
  • Step #4 Immediately toss the apples with the zest & juice to prevent them from turning brown.
  • Step #5 Add the cherries, nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar, flour, & salt.
  • Step #6 Flour a board & lightly roll each sheet of puff pastry to a 12 by 12-inch square.
  • Step #7 Cut each sheet into 4 smaller squares & keep chilled until ready to use.
  • Step #8 Brush the edges of each square with the egg wash & neatly place about 1/3 c of the apple mixture on half of the square.
  • Step #9 Fold the pastry diagonally over the apple mixture & seal by pressing the edges with a fork.
  • Step #10 Transfer to a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
  • Step #11 Brush the top this with egg wash, make 2 small slits, sprinkle with sugar, & bake for 20 mins, until browned & puffed.
  • Step #12 Serve warm or at about room temp.
