Reubenburgers Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 lb lean ground beef .
  • 6 hamburger buns, split .
  • 1/4 tsp salt .
  • 1 c swiss cheese, shredded, about 4 oz .
  • 1/3 c ketchup .
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil .
  • 1 small onion, sliced .
  • 1/2 c apple juice or beef broth .
  • 2 tbsps prepared yellow mustard .
  • 1 1/2 c sauerkraut, rinsed & drained

Directions
  • Step #1 Heat oil in a medium skillet.
  • Step #2 Add onion; saute until lightly browned.
  • Step #3 Stir in sauerkraut, apple juice or broth, & ketchup.
  • Step #4 Simmer uncovered for 20 mins.
  • Step #5 Keep warm.
  • Step #6 In a medium mixing bowl, mix ground beef, mustard & salt.
  • Step #7 Shape into 12 thin patties & place & even amount of the cheese on top of 6 of the patties.
  • Step #8 Take the other 6 patties & place on top of the patties with the cheese & seal the edges to hold in the cheese filling.
  • Step #9 Place on gas grill over medium-high heat or on charcoal grill 5-6 inches from medium-hot coals.
  • Step #10 Cook 6-8 mins per side, or until well done.
  • Step #11 Place buns, cut side down, around the edges of the grill to toast, about 3-4 mins.
  • Step #12 Serve burgers on toasted buns & top this with the warmed sauerkraut mixture.
