Beef And Bean Braid Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 c shredded cheddar cheese .
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper .
  • 2 tbsps chili powder .
  • 1 tsp garlic salt .
  • 1 (1/4 oz) package active dry yeast .
  • 1 (16 oz) can kidney beans, rinsed & drained .
  • 1 tbsp sugar .
  • Filling .
  • 3/4 c warm water (110-115 degrees F) .
  • 2 tbsps butter, melted .
  • 1 lb lean ground beef .
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin .
  • 1/2 tsp salt .
  • 1 medium onion, sliced .
  • Braid .
  • 1 egg .
  • 2 c all-purpose flour .
  • 2/3 c water .
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Directions
  • Step #1 In large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
  • Step #2 Add butter, sugar, salt, egg & 1 1/2 c flour; beat until smooth.
  • Step #3 Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Step #4 Turn onto floured surface; knead until smooth & elastic, about 6-8 mins.
  • Step #5 Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top.
  • Step #6 Cover up & let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hr.
  • Step #7 Meanwhile, In a large-ish skillet, cook the beef, onion & garlic salt over med-heat/flame until meat is no longer pink; drain.
  • Step #8 Stir in the beans, water & seasonings; bring to a boil.
  • Step #9 Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 5-10 mins or until thickened.
  • Step #10 Punch dough down.
  • Step #11 Turn onto a lightly floured surface; roll this into a 16-inch by 11-inch rectangle.
  • Step #12 Transfer to a greased 15-inch by 10-inch baking sheet.
  • Step #13 Spread beef mixture down center of dough; sprinkle with cheese.
  • Step #14 On each long side, cut 1-inch wide strips about 1/2 inch from filling.
  • Step #15 Starting at one end, fold alternating strips at an angle across filling; seal ends.
  • Step #16 Cover up & let rise until doubled, 30 mins.
  • Step #17 Brush egg over dough.
  • Step #18 Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 mins or until golden brown.
  • Step #19 Remove to wire rack; let this stand 5 mins before slicing.
