Ingredients
1 1/2 c shredded cheddar cheese .
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper .
2 tbsps chili powder .
1 tsp garlic salt .
1 (1/4 oz) package active dry yeast .
1 (16 oz) can kidney beans, rinsed & drained .
1 tbsp sugar .
Filling .
3/4 c warm water (110-115 degrees F) .
2 tbsps butter, melted .
1 lb lean ground beef .
1/4 tsp ground cumin .
1/2 tsp salt .
1 medium onion, sliced .
Braid .
1 egg .
2 c all-purpose flour .
2/3 c water .
1 egg, lightly beaten
Directions
Step #1 In large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
Step #2 Add butter, sugar, salt, egg & 1 1/2 c flour; beat until smooth.
Step #3 Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
Step #4 Turn onto floured surface; knead until smooth & elastic, about 6-8 mins.
Step #5 Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top.
Step #6 Cover up & let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hr.
Step #7 Meanwhile, In a large-ish skillet, cook the beef, onion & garlic salt over med-heat/flame until meat is no longer pink; drain.
Step #8 Stir in the beans, water & seasonings; bring to a boil.
Step #9 Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 5-10 mins or until thickened.
Step #10 Punch dough down.
Step #11 Turn onto a lightly floured surface; roll this into a 16-inch by 11-inch rectangle.
Step #12 Transfer to a greased 15-inch by 10-inch baking sheet.
Step #13 Spread beef mixture down center of dough; sprinkle with cheese.
Step #14 On each long side, cut 1-inch wide strips about 1/2 inch from filling.
Step #15 Starting at one end, fold alternating strips at an angle across filling; seal ends.
Step #16 Cover up & let rise until doubled, 30 mins.
Step #17 Brush egg over dough.
Step #18 Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 mins or until golden brown.
Step #19 Remove to wire rack; let this stand 5 mins before slicing.
