Deep Dish Apple Butter Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Ingredients
  • 2 tsps egg whites .
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves .
  • 3/4 c fat-free condensed milk .
  • 1 1/2 tsps white vinegar .
  • 1 tsp cinnamon .
  • 3/4 c vegetable shortening .
  • 2 c whole wheat flour, sifted .
  • 3/4 tsp salt .
  • 1/8 tsp ginger .
  • 1 tsp nutmeg .
  • 1 1/4 c pumpkin .
  • 1 1/2 tsps sugar .
  • 1/2 c egg whites .
  • Pie Shell .
  • 1/4 c water .
  • 1/2 tsp salt .
  • 2 tbsps egg whites .
  • 1/2 c brown sugar, packed .
  • Filling .
  • 1 c apple butter

Directions
  • Step #1 Using pie shell ingredients, sugar, mix together flour, & salt.
  • Step #2 Cut in shortening.
  • Step #3 Add egg white, vinegar, & water.
  • Step #4 Mix well.
  • Step #5 On floured work surface, roll out ¼ inch (or less) thick.
  • Step #6 Place in deep pie dish & trim overhanging edges.
  • Step #7 You will have extra dough left--set it aside for now.
  • Step #8 Preheat oven to 425°F.
  • Step #9 Using filling ingredients, sugar, pumpkin, mix apple butter, salt, & spices in bowl.
  • Step #10 Stir in slightly beaten egg whites.
  • Step #11 Gradually add milk & mix well.
  • Step #12 Pour into pie shell.
  • Step #13 Lightly brush exposed pie crust with egg white.
  • Step #14 Cover up edges of shell with foil wrap.
  • Step #15 Bake for 25 mins.
  • Step #16 While baking, use cookie cutters to cut shapes out of remaining pie dough.
  • Step #17 Brush tops of dough shapes with egg white & place this in your own pattern on top of filling (I usually do hearts or stars).
  • Step #18 Remove foil wrap from pie shell edges & return to oven for 15 more mins until set.
