2 lbs potatoes, peeled & sliced about 1/8 inch thick .
1 pinch fresh nutmeg, freshly grated .
1/8 tsp ground black pepper .
1 1/4 tsps salt .
1 pinch cayenne pepper (optional) .
2 1/4 c half-and-half .
1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
Directions
Step #1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees Rub bottom & sides of 6-c gratin dish with garlic.
Step #2 Mince garlic & put aside.
Step #3 Wait about 2 mins & spread about half the butter into dish.
Step #4 Bring half-and-half, salt, nutmeg, cayenne, potatoes, pepper, & garlic to boil in medium saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring every once in awhile.
Step #5 Reduce heat & let simmer for about 2 mins.
Step #6 Pour potato mixyure into prepared dish & distrbute potatoes eveny Gently press down potatoes until covered by liquid & dot with remaining butter.
Step #7 Bake until top is golden brown (basting once or twice during first 45 mins) about 1 hr 15 mins.
