Step #1 In a heavy saucepan, mix the first five ingredients.
Step #2 Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thick enough to coat a metal spoon & reaches at least 160 degrees F.
Step #3 Remove from the heat; cool quickly by setting pan in ice & stirring the mixture.
Step #4 Cover & put in the fridge overnight or freeze as soon as possible.
Step #5 When ready to freeze, pour custard & vanilla into the cylinder of an ice cream freezer.
Step #6 Freeze according to the manufacturer's directions.
