Ingredients
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 c all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 c warm milk (110 to 115 degrees F)
  • 1 (.25 oz) package active dry yeast
  • 4 tbsps butter or margarine, melted, divided
  • 1/4 c warm water (105 degrees to 115 degrees)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Directions
  • Step #1 In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
  • Step #2 Add sugar; let this stand for 5 mins.
  • Step #3 Add the milk, 1 tbsp butter & egg; mix well.
  • Step #4 Add flour & salt; beat until smooth.
  • Step #5 Cover & let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 45 mins.
  • Step #6 Brush griddle & 3-in.
  • Step #7 metal rings or open-topped metal cookie cutters with remaining butter.
  • Step #8 Place rings on griddle; heat over low heat/flame.
  • Step #9 Pour 3 tbsps of batter into each ring.
  • Step #10 Cook for 7 mins or until bubbles begin to pop & the top appears dry.
  • Step #11 Remove rings.
  • Step #12 Turn crumpets; cook 1-2 mins longer or until the second side is golden brown.
  • Step #13 Serve warm or let cool on a wire rack & toast before serving.
