Savory Beef Stew Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/4 c chili sauce .
  • 5 slices bacon .
  • 1/2 c onions, sliced .
  • 1 (2.5-3 lb) beef chuck roast .
  • 6 carrots, cut into chunks .
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme .
  • 1 (10 oz) package frozen peas, thawed .
  • 1/3 c flour .
  • 3 c fresh mushrooms .
  • 2-3 c water .
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper .
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil .
  • 2 tsps beef bouillon granules

Directions
  • Step #1 Trim fat from meat.
  • Step #2 Cut the meat into 1-1/2 inch cubes.
  • Step #3 Place in plastic bag along with the flour.
  • Step #4 Shake to coat.
  • Step #5 Set aside.
  • Step #6 In an ovenproof Dutch oven, cook bacon till crisp.
  • Step #7 Remove bacon; drain, crumble & set aside.
  • Step #8 Reserve drippings in pan.
  • Step #9 Brown meat, half at a time, in drippings.
  • Step #10 Remove all meat & set aside.
  • Step #11 Add mushrooms & onions; cook this until tender.
  • Step #12 Return meat to pan along with bacon, bouillon granules, chili sauce, thyme, 2 c water, basil & pepper.
  • Step #13 Bring to a boil.
  • Step #14 Cover up & bake in a preheated 325F degree oven for approximately 2-1/2 hrs (add more water during cooking time, if necessary).
  • Step #15 Meanwhile, cook the carrots in boiling water for 10 mins or until tender.
  • Step #16 Drain.
  • Step #17 Stir the carrots into the stew.
  • Step #18 Sprinkle top the peas over the mixture.
  • Step #19 Cover up & bake for an extra 15 mins more or until the meat is tender.
