Five-spice Roast Pork Belly Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/4 c soy sauce .
  • 2 tbsps sugar .
  • 2 lbs pork belly, at least 50% lean, with rind intact .
  • 1 tsp five-spice powder .
  • 1 tsp sesame oil

Directions
  • Step #1 Make the marinade by mixing the soy sauce, sugar & five-spice powder in a bowl until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Step #2 Stir in the sesame oil.
  • Step #3 Place the pork belly in a sealable plastic bag & pour the marinade over it.
  • Step #4 Marinate in the refrigerator for 4 hrs, turning every once in awhile.
  • Step #5 Heat the oven to 450 degrees.
  • Step #6 Pierce holes every inch through the pork skin with a metal skewer.
  • Step #7 Place it skin side up on a rack set over a baking dish, containing about one-half inch of water.
  • Step #8 Roast until dark golden & crispy, about 1 hr, basting the top (skin) side with the soy sauce mixture every 15 mins.
  • Step #9 Remove from the oven & let rest for 15 mins before slicing.
  • Step #10 Thinly slice lengthwise with a serrated knife.
