German Onion Cake Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 tsp salt .
  • 1 egg, well beaten .
  • 2 c all-purpose flour .
  • 4 tsps baking powder .
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper .
  • 2 tbsps butter (1/4 stick) .
  • 3/4 c milk (may need up to 1 c) .
  • 1/4 tsp paprika .
  • 1/4 c cornstarch .
  • 2 tsps poppy seeds .
  • 3/4 c sour cream .
  • 1/4 tsp dried marjoram .
  • 2 c onions, coarsely sliced .
  • 5 tbsps vegetable shortening

Directions
  • Step #1 In a medium skillet, saute the onions in butter over low heat/flame until they just begin to brown, about 15 mins.
  • Step #2 Spice up with ¼ tsp of the salt, the marjoram, & the pepper.
  • Step #3 Set aside to cool.
  • Step #4 Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  • Step #5 In a food processor/blender bowl place flour, & the remaining salt, cornstarch, baking powder, mix.
  • Step #6 Add the shortening & process just until it is the texture of soft crumbs.
  • Step #7 Add the milk & mix quickly to form a soft dough.
  • Step #8 Oil a 10-inch round cake pan & lightly use your fingers to spread the dough out evenly.
  • Step #9 Spread the cooked onion over the top.
  • Step #10 Beat the egg & sour cream together.
  • Step #11 Spoon the mixture over the onion, & spread it out to the very edge of the pan.
  • Step #12 Sprinkle top lightly with poppy seeds & paprika.
  • Step #13 Bake for 20 mins.
  • Step #14 Let cool slightly, then cut into wedges.
