Traditional Southern Biscuits Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 tsps salt .
  • 2 tbsps butter, cold .
  • 1/2 c vegetable shortening, cold .
  • 2 c all-purpose flour .
  • 1 1/2 tsps baking powder .
  • 1 c 2% low-fat milk

Directions
  • Step #1 Preheat the oven to 400F degrees F.
  • Step #2 In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, baking powder & salt.
  • Step #3 Mix well.
  • Step #4 Add 1 tbsp of the cold butter & the cold shortening & work it into the dry ingredients, using your hands, until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Step #5 Stir in the milk.
  • Step #6 The dough will be sticky.
  • Step #7 Dust your work surface with some flour.
  • Step #8 Turn the dough onto the floured surface.
  • Step #9 Gently fold each side toward the center.
  • Step #10 Pick up the dough & dust the work surface with extra flour.
  • Step #11 Return the dough to the floured surface & fold each side towards the center again.
  • Step #12 Turn the dough over & press it out to 1-inch thickness.
  • Step #13 Cut the biscuits, do not twist the cutter, straight down, with a 2 1/4-inch round cookie cutter.
  • Step #14 Melt the remaining tbsp of butter & add to a 10-inch round cake pan.
  • Step #15 Place the biscuits in the pan, turning once (to coat both sides with butter), about 1/4-inch apart.
  • Step #16 Let the biscuits rest for 15 mins before baking.
  • Step #17 Bake until golden brown, about 15 mins.
