Almost Instant Tzimmes Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 ts Salt
  • 1 tb Water
  • 1 lg Egg yolk
  • 2 tb Dry yeast
  • 1 tb Plus 3/4 c sugar
  • 5 lg Eggs
  • 1/2 c Plus 2/3 c warm water;
  • 3/4 c Vegetable oil
  • 7 1/2 c All-purpose flour;

Directions
  • Step #1 mix 1/2 c warm water, yeast & 1 tbsp sugar in large glass measuring c & stir until yeast dissolves.
  • Step #2 Let yeast mixture stand at about room temp until foamy, about 10 mins.
  • Step #3 In large bowl of heavy-duty mixer fitted with whisk attachment, beat 5 eggs until mixed.
  • Step #4 Add oil, salt & 3/4 c sugar & beat until pale yellow & slightly thickened, about 4 mins.
  • Step #5 Beat in 2/3 c warm water.
  • Step #6 Add yeast mixture & beat until mixed.
  • Step #7 Remove whisk & fit mixer with dough hook.
  • Step #8 Add enough flour 1 c at a time to form smooth dough, beating well after each addition.
  • Step #9 Beat on medium speed until smooth & elastic, about 5 mins, adding flour by tbspfuls if sticky.
  • Step #10 Turn out onto floured surface & knead 2 mins.
  • Step #11 Lightly oil large bowl.
  • Step #12 Add dough, turning to coat with oil.
  • Step #13 Cover with plastic wrap, then with clean kitchen towel.
  • Step #14 Let dough rise in warm draft-free area until doubled in volume, about 1 hr.
  • Step #15 Punch down dough.
  • Step #16 Cover with plastic & clean kitchen towel & let rise 30 mins.
  • Step #17 Grease 2 large baking sheets.
  • Step #18 Turn out dough onto lightly floured surface.
  • Step #19 Divide dough into 2 equal portions.
  • Step #20 Divide each portion into 3 equal pieces.
  • Step #21 Roll each piece into 9-inch-long rope.
  • Step #22 Braid 3 ropes together; pinch ends together to seal.
  • Step #23 Repeat with remaining dough pieces, forming 2 braids.
  • Step #24 Place each braid on baking sheet.
  • Step #25 Cover with towel.
  • Step #26 Let rise in warm area until almost doubled, about 30 mins.
  • Step #27 preheat your trusty oven to 400F.
  • Step #28 Whisk yolk with 1 tbsp water to mix.
  • Step #29 Brush dough with egg mixture.
  • Step #30 Bake 10 mins.
  • Step #31 Reduce oven temperature to 350F.
  • Step #32 bake this until bread is golden brown & sounds hollow when tapped on bottom, about 35 mins.
  • Step #33 Transfer loaves to rack & cool completely.

  • Step #35 Wrap tightly in plastic & store at about room temp.
