Step #1 Melt shortening in large pot with lid.
Step #2 Add meat slowly & brown.
Step #3 Add garlic during last 5 min of browning & cook this until soft.
Step #4 Add liquid from tomatoes.
Step #5 Chop & add tomatoes.
Step #6 stir in the remaining ingredients except salt & bring to boil.
Step #7 Cover, reduce heat and simmer about 2 hrs, stirring every once in awhile.
Step #8 When meat is very tender, taste & add salt.
Step #9 If too thin, remove lid & let simmer another 30 mins.
