Chocolate/coconut Bars Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/4 c Granulated sugar
  • 1/4 c Honey
  • 12 oz Phyllo dough; approximately eighteen sheets, thawed if frozen
  • 1/2 c Unsalted diet margarine; melted
  • 6 oz Walnuts; toasted & sliced
  • 2 oz Semisweet chocolate; sliced into small pieces
  • 3/4 c Dark raisins

Directions
  • Step #1 1.
  • Step #2 Spray a 13 x 9" baking pan with nonstick cooking spray; set aside.
  • Step #3 2.
  • Step #4 In medium bowl, raisins, mix oven toasted walnuts, sugar and chocolate; set aside.
  • Step #5 3.
  • Step #6 On wax paper, stack phyllo sheets & trim into 13 x 9" rectangle.
  • Step #7 Cover phyllo stack with wax paper & a damp kitchen towel.
  • Step #8 With serrated knife, cut phyllo trimmings into 1/2" pieces.
  • Step #9 Place trimmings in large bowl; toss with hands to separate into pieces; cover with plastic wrap.
  • Step #10 Set aside.

  • Step #12 preheat your trusty oven to 300F degrees.
  • Step #13 Place one sheet of phyllo into bottom of prepared pan; brush with 1 tsp margarine.
  • Step #14 Layer with three more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with 1 tsp margarine; Sprinkle top top sheet with 1/2 c nut mixture.

  • Step #16 Place one sheet of phyllo on top of nut mixture; brush with 1 tsp margarine.
  • Step #17 Repeat layering with three more sheets, brushing each sheet with 1 tsp margarine.
  • Step #18 Sprinkle top 1/2 c nut mixture over top layer.
  • Step #19 Repeat layering phyllo, margarine & nut mixture two more times, ending with nut mixture.
  • Step #20 6.
  • Step #21 Top nut mixture with two remaining sheets of phyllo, brushing each one with 1 tsp margarine.
  • Step #22 top this with reserved phyllo trimmings; drizzle with remaining 2 tbsps margarine.
  • Step #23 Bake 1 hr 20 mins, or until golden.
  • Step #24 Remove pan to rack.
  • Step #25 7.
  • Step #26 In small saucepan, heat honey until very hot but not boiling.
  • Step #27 Drizzle honey over hot baklava.
  • Step #28 Cool on rack.
  • Step #29 Cover & store this in refrigerator.

  • Step #32 Simply spread nuts on a baking sheet & place this in a 350F oven; stir every once in awhile & remove when nuts are golden brown.
  • Step #33 If you'd rather not heat up the oven, toast them in a nonstick skillet--stirring & shaking the pan often--for about 5 mins, or heat them in a toaster oven.
