Ingredients
1 lb Extra-firm tofu; drained and pressed
1/4 c Soy sauce
1/4 ts Crushed red pepper
1 1/4 c Water
1 tb Garlic; coarsely sliced
4 Star anise; optional
1 tb Fresh ginger; finely sliced
2 ts Sesame seeds
Directions
Step #1 Makes 3/4 lb.
Step #2 Slice the pressed tofu into 1/2 inch slices.
Step #3 Cut each slice in 1/2 to create squares.
Step #4 preheat your trusty oven to 450F.
Step #5 mix the water, garlic, ginger, soy, start anise & red pepper flakes in a skillet.
Step #6 Arrange the tofu pieces inthe marinade in onelayer.
Step #7 Bring to a boil.
Step #8 Cover, reduce theheat to med-low, and simmer for 15 mins.
Step #9 Brush the bottom of a shallow baking dish with sesame oil.
Step #10 Remove the tofu from the marinade, brushing off any piecesof garlic or ginger.
Step #11 Place the tofu on the baking sheet, & flip each piece so both sides are coated with the oil.
Step #12 Sprinkle top with 1 tsp of the sesame seeds.
Step #13 Bake uncovered until the top is a deep brown, 15 - 20 miutes.
Step #14 Flip over, & Sprinkle top with the remaining seed.
Step #15 bake this until the second side is deeply browned, about 15 mins more.
Step #16 When cool, the tofu will become firmer.
