Step #1 This is a recipe for a Czech barley casserole that is traditionally served on Christmas Eve but is also good as a side dish.
Step #2 Cook the onion in the butter until translucent.
Step #3 Wash the mushrooms until free from grit.
Step #4 Add the barley (or barley grits, until the water has evaporated, salt and water to the onions & cook, mushrooms, uncovered, stirring frequently.
Step #5 (Mixture will be very thick.
Step #6 ) Add the remaining ingredients.
Step #7 place this in a greased casserole or baking dish & bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 mins.
Step #8 I usually cut this recipe in half unless we are having a really big crowd.
