Ingredients
  • 1 1/4 lb Sweet butter; melted
  • 1 pk Commercial phyllo sheets
  • --BAKLAVA-----
  • 3/4 c Finely sliced pistachios
  • 1 ts Nutmeg
  • 1/2 c Superfine sugar
  • 1 ts Cinnamon
  • 3/4 c Finely sliced walnuts
  • 1/2 c sliced blanched almonds

Directions
  • Step #1 ---SYRUP------ 2 1/2 c Sugar 1 3/4 c Water 1 Orange's rind; finely grated 1 Lemon's rind; finely grated 5 Whole cloves 1 Cinnamon stick 1 c Honey mix nuts, sugar, cinnamon & nutmeg.
  • Step #2 Brush a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan well with butter.
  • Step #3 Separate 25 phyllo sheets from package.
  • Step #4 Place under a smooth, damp towel to prevent drying.
  • Step #5 Wrap remaining filo well.
  • Step #6 Freeze for future use.
  • Step #7 Place one phyllo sheet in pan.
  • Step #8 Trim to fit.
  • Step #9 Brush generously with melted butter.
  • Step #10 Repeat procedure until there are 5 layers of buttered phyllo in the pan.
  • Step #11 Sprinkle top with 1/4 nut mixture.
  • Step #12 Repeat this procedure two more times, ending with phyllo.
  • Step #13 Drizzle any remaining butter over top.
  • Step #14 Bake in 350 degree oven 1-1/2 hrs or until golden brown.
  • Step #15 Remove baklava from oven.
  • Step #16 Using a sharp knife, as soon as possible cut long, diagonal lines from corner to corner, forming an "X".
  • Step #17 Follow these guidelines to cut baklava into serving-size diamonds.
  • Step #18 While still hot, pour cooled syrup over baklava.
  • Step #19 Syrup: mix sugar, orange & lemon rinds, water, cloves and cinnamon stick in saucepan.
  • Step #20 Bring to boil.
  • Step #21 Simmer, uncovered, about 5 mins to thicken syrup slightly.
  • Step #22 remove this from heat.
  • Step #23 Discard spices.
  • Step #24 stir in the honey.
  • Step #25 Cool at about room temp.
  • Step #26 Pour over hot baklava.
  • Step #27 Allow to stand overnight before serving.
