  • Step #1 Use cooked barley as a substitute for cooked rice or other grains in your favorite recipes.

  • Step #11 : 4 c | +-- ---------+ COOKING DIRECTIONS ================== Boil water.
  • Step #12 stir in the barley and salt, if desired.
  • Step #13 Cover; reduce heat.
  • Step #14 Simmer: ~~ 45 to 50 mins for Medium Barley ~~ 10 to 12 mins for Quick Barley remove this from heat; let this stand 5 mins.
  • Step #15 HELPFUL HINTS To store cooked barley: put in the fridge barley in tightly covered container up to 1 week.
  • Step #16 Or, freeze in tightly covered container bag up to 6 months.
  • Step #17 To reheat cooked barley: MICROWAVE: Remove barley from freezer container or bag.
  • Step #18 place this in microwavable container.
  • Step #19 For each c of barley, Sprinkle top with 2 tbsps water; cover.
  • Step #20 Microwave on HIGH 2 to 3 mins, stirring half way through cooking.
  • Step #21 STOVETOP: Place barley in heavy saucepan.
  • Step #22 For each c of barley, Sprinkle top with 2 tbsps water; cover.
  • Step #23 Cook over low heat/flame 5 to 8 mins or until heated through, stirring every once in awhile.
  • Step #24 For a new twist -- ~~ toss cooked barley into salads ~~ stir cooked barley into soups & stews ~~ mix cooked barley with stir-fried vegetables.
