Medieval Italian Stew (pie In A Pipkin) Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 c Powdered Sugar
  • 2 tb sliced Orange Peel
  • 1 ts Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 lg Egg; Beaten With A Little Water For Glazing
  • 1/2 ts Ground Nutmeg
  • 1 c Honey
  • 4 c Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 ts Ground Cloves
  • Coarse Sugar Crystals
  • 2 ts Baking Powder
  • 20 Blanched Almonds
  • 2 Extra Large Eggs
  • 1/2 ts Ground Ginger

Directions
  • Step #1 Sift the flour, & baking powder together, spices, sugar, mixing well.
  • Step #2 Add the eggs, honey, & orange peel to make a soft dough.
  • Step #3 On a floured work surface, roll out the dough to about 1/2-inch thick.
  • Step #4 Cut into shapes with cookie cutters, & place on a lightly greased or non-stick cookie sheet, brushing each one with the egg wash glaze.
  • Step #5 Place 1/2 of an almond in the top center of each cookie & Sprinkle top with the sugar crystals.
  • Step #6 Bake in a preheated 350 Degree F.
  • Step #7 oven until done, about 15 mins.
  • Step #8 Cool on wire racks & store this in airtight tins.
