Step #1 Sift flour into a mound on a working surface & hollow out a well in the center with your fingertips.
Step #2 Place the butter, egg, salt & half the water in the center of the ring; work up the center mixture with 2 table knives or a pastry cutter, with a cutting motion.
Step #3 Work in flour carefully from inside of ring, adding more water as needed.
Step #4 Mix until all flour is added & dough holds together.
Step #5 this can all be done in a cuisinart following pastry instructions.
Step #6 Gather dough into a ball.
Step #7 Wrap securely & put in the fridge for at least 1 hr.
