How to make it

  • *Place oil in a pot and heat on high
  • *Dice the onion and add to the heated oil. Cook the onion until they brown.
  • *In a separate bowl, wash the lentils by rinsing and draining with water 3 times. Add the lentils, salt, and broth into the pot and bring to a boil.
  • *Turn the stove down to medium and cook until the broth is almost gone.
  • * In a separate bowl, wash the rice the same way that the lentils were washed.
  • *Add the rice to the pot with 1 1/2 cups of water + cumin
  • *Bring the contents to a boil with the pot’s lid cocked open until the water is almost gone.
  • *Turn the heat down to low at this point, and place a thin cloth or paper towel over the pot and the lid on top of fit to capture the extra moisture during cooking, which can make the rice soggy.
  • *Let it cook for 30-40 minutes
