Traditional White Bread Recipe

Traditional White Bread Recipe
Nice and soft. Not extremely rich. I use this for my everyday bread. From toast to sandwiches, to snacking. :-)

Ingredients
  • 4 Tbs yeast
  • 1 C warm water (105 to 115 degrees)
  • 3 1/4 C warm water
  • 6 Tbs sugar
  • 2 Tbs salt
  • 4 Tbs oil (any kind..I use canola or vege)
  • 8-9 C all purpose or unbleached flour
  • Butter or margarine to put atop loaves once baked.

Directions
  1. Dissolve yeast into 1 cup of water (In a pretty big bowl). Add sugar, and let sit for 5-10 minutes (or until somewhat frothed). Stir in the rest of the water, salt, and some of the flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough flour until you have a dough that is easy to handle.
  2. Next, you'll have to knead the dough until smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes). Place about two Tbs of oil into the bottom of a bowl, and put your dough into it, and flip it over, so the oiled top is up. Cover, and let proof until doubled in size. (One hour)
  3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Farenhiet, or if you have a convection oven, 325 degrees.
  4. Punch down dough, and divide it into five pieces. Shape each into a loaf and place in a regular loaf pan. Let rise again until doubled. Bake 25-30 minutes. After baked, butter tops of loaves.
  5. ***This also makes really great cinnamon bread or rolls. Just make some cinnamon sugar, and roll it up inside of some dough for cinnamon bread (you could sprinkle some sugar on top too!)

I made this last night and it is delicious! I made 4 loaves instead of 5 since I only had 4 pans and they turned out fine. This was my first time making bread, but it was quite easy - thank you for the fantastic recipe!
One thing I found hard was mixing all the flour into the dough - I ended up having at least 3 cups leftover, so I only used about 8-9 cups of flour. By the time I got that much mixed in it was hard to manouver and my arms were getting sore, so I just went with it...but it still tasted delicious!
