How to make it
- ~ Cowboy Coffee ~
- Grind your coffee beans.
- Place about 7 teaspoons or so of the coffee grounds, along with water in your favorite beat up camping coffee pot.Place over a firey flame and bring to a rolling boil (One important tip: Whoever makes the coffee will change the recipe.)
- Let this steep a spell, add a bit of cold water, just to settle the grounds a tad.
- Then pour very slowly, trying your darn'est to keep the grounds out of your cup.
- ~ Hardtack ~
- Take that stick that you were pokin' in the bushes, checking for rattlesnakes, and whittle a sharp point to it.
- Combine all the dry ingredients that you have carried in a ziplock bag.
- Add the water, knead, stop when you have a firm sticky dough.
- Cook on the stick over your camp fire.
- Hardtack is done 'Wale' when it's done.
- You want it crisp and brittle.
- ~ Jerky ~
- If you secure game in the wilderness about the only way to preserve it for long periods of time, besides making 'Pemican' out of it,is to shot it,skin it,cut it up in pieces of about one half inch thick, one inch wide and ten to twelve inches long.
- Build a log tower about three foot square, open at the top, this is done simply by cutting up small logs, sharpening them on one end and driving them into the ground (or) If your not around Mesquite you can simply dig a three foot square hole about three foot deep into the ground, then dig a narrow ditch from the side down into the bottom of the hole so as to have enough oxyen supply, when the fire is built in the hole.
- Now build a small slow fire in the bottom of the hole.Place green lenghts of small branches...Oh,say about one inch thick or so over the open end.
- Now lay the strips of meat over the pieces of wood, cover over the top of the hole with pieces of wood.
- Leave just enough of an opening so that the fire will not go out.
- Keep a slow smoldering fire going for about 12 hours.
- Drop in pieces of wood to keep the fire goin'
- If your lucky enough to be near some Aspen Trees, place some of the leaves on the smoldering fire. They give the meat a good flavor.
- If you have ole' Hickory or Mesquite or Maple...use them for the fire.
- Wild Game made into Jerky will last practically indefinitely.
- To eat it...that is if you don't want to chew on it for hours...then
- Just soak it in water for about four or five hours to soften it up.
- If possible, boil it into a stew,if you don't have vegetables, use wild grape leaves,or,the bark from small Pine Trees boiled with the Jerky is excellent.
- Now...that's called living in the wild...Not a recipe for most...but a method of survival for some.
- ~ Okay... 'Josey Wales'...A loner you may be,but one Cherokee and a couple of companions, and there could be a showdown, just remember that the camp blaze has no dry fires, and that the Rangers do not know the true identity of the secret, knowing that you owe them that...Chew,Spit!
- No Feud...No Fine!
- 'Eastwood Rules'
- Myth...Maybe...Man With No Name...Maybe...One Outlaw None The Same!
- Time to get the 'hoss' and 'mosey' on...Spit,Chew!
- ~ Reckon this is what ye' would call a "TRAIL MIX" ~
