Pickled Fried Herrings

- 2 lbs herrings, cleaned, beheaded (you can use whiting fish ) shopping list
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour shopping list
- oil for frying shopping list
- 2 medium onions, chopped shopping list
- Pickle: shopping list
- 1/2 cup white vinegar shopping list
- 2 1/2 water shopping list
- 2 -3 bay leaves shopping list
- 5-6 allspice berries shopping list
- 5-6 whole black pepper shopping list
- 2 teaspoons mustard seeds shopping list
- 2 garlic cloves shopping list
How to make it
- Coat the fish with the flour. Heat a pan with the oil. Fry on both sides until lightly browned. Put into a large bowl with the chopped onions.
- Cook the pickle using all of the ingredients listed above. Pour the hot pickle on the fish and onions. Cover with a lid. Let cool and then put into refrigerator for 24 hours. Serve with bread. It will keep in refrigerator for a week.

I tried to salvage a new jar of herring from Europe using this recipe. It did a good job of changing the flavor to something more enjoyable.
