The classic Canadian layered squares
Ingredients
Bottom Layer
- 1/2 cup butter shopping list
- 1/4 cup sugar shopping list
- 1 square unsweetened chocolate shopping list
- 1 teaspoon vanilla shopping list
- 1 egg, beaten shopping list
- 2 cups graham crumbs shopping list
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts shopping list
- 1 cup shredded coconut shopping list
Middle Layer
- 1/2 cup butter shopping list
- 2 tablespoons custard powder (or vanilla pudding mix) shopping list
- 3 tablespoons milk shopping list
- 2 cups icing sugar shopping list
Top Layer
- 6 squares semisweet chocolate shopping list
- 1 tablespoon butter shopping list
How to make it
- Butter a 9×9x2 pan
Bottom Layer
- Put first 4 ingredients in double boiler
- Cook over boiling water until well blended
- Add egg and cook 5 minutes, stirring
- Stir in next 3 ingredients
- Press into pan
- Chill 15 minutes
Middle Layer
- Cream butter until fluffy
- Beat in custard powder and milk
- Beat in icing sugar until smooth
- Spread over first layer
- Chill at least 15 minutes
Top Layer
- Melt chocolate and butter over low heat
- Spread over second layer
- Chill until firm
- Cut in squares and keep refrigerated or frozen
