Apple Pastilla

- 6-8 medium apples (I used gingerGold and Empire apples) cored and thinly sliced shopping list
- 2 T. lemon juice shopping list
- 2 T. or more! cinnamon shopping list
- 1 t. grated nutmeg shopping list
- 1/3 cup sugar shopping list
- 1 cup walnuts chopped and toasted shopping list
- cinnamon + sugar sprinkle - 2 T. each shopping list
- about 10 filo sheets-already thawed --Keep under a slightly wet towelwhile using. I cut the sheets in half , and make a + as I place the layers of filo in the baking pan. : first horizontally, and 2nd vertically. horizontally, and next vertically.... shopping list
- {butter + evoo) 2 Tablespoons of each shopping list
- non-stick spray shopping list
- The custard shopping list
- 3 T. cornstarch shopping list
- 1 1/2 cups milk (soymilk here) shopping list
- pinch of salt shopping list
- 1/3 cup sugar shopping list
- 2 T. "eggbeaters" shopping list
- 2 t. vanilla shopping list
How to make it
- Toss the lemon juice with the sliced apples . ( I core, but do not peel)
- sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg and sugar. set aside. after toasting the nuts, set aside.
- The Custard:
- In a 4 cup pyrex measuring cup, measure the cornstarch, sugar and salt, ; toss to combine. stir in the egg and milk and with a fork or whisk, stir all together until the cornstarch is blended in and without lumps. Zap for 2 minutes in the microwave. Stir, and assess thickness. Keep adding 1 or 2 minutes at a time. Assessing and stirring each time. At the end, let it boil for 1 minute. Remove from oven, and stir in the vanilla. (If it gets too exuberant and almost spills over, open the oven door to deflate. Then continue on the 1 minute ending.) Set aside.
- In a 1 cup pyrex measuring cup melt the butter. Add the oil. set aside.
- Game Time: In a 8 X 8 inch baking pan :
- 4 filo layers (Each filo layer is brushed with melted butter or sprayed with non-stick spray . You want to completely most of the filo layers) Next stack :
- 1/2 of the vanilla custard
- SPRinKLE (cinn/sugar0
- 2 filo layers
- Half the apple slices
- SPRINKLE
- 2 filo layers
- half of the walnuts
- sprinkle!!
- 2 filo layers
- the last of thecustard
- sprinkles!!
- 2 filo layers
- SPRINKLES of cinnamon sugar!!!
- the rest of the apple slices
- sprinkle
- 2 filo layers
- The rest of the walnuts
- SprinKLEs
- Top with 3 layers of filo sheets, well buttered.(sprinkle in-between the layers if you like!
- Bake 350 degree preheated oven until golden. 30-45 minutes
- Serve with cool whip or vanilla ice cream, or? refrigerate .
