How to make it

  • 1. Put lentils, water, and red pepper flakes in a pot.
  • 2. If using millet, add millet and simmer until well cooked. If using bulgur, simmer 20 minutes until lentils are mushy but still wet.
  • 3. Add tomato paste, bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
  • 4. If using bulgur, add bulgur.
  • 5. Cover and let stand 30 minutes.
  • 6. Chop onion and garlic finely, and saute in oil until golden.
  • 7. Add cumin, turmeric, pepper, and salt, and cook 2 more minutes.
  • 8. Mix all ingredients together and form into cookie sized patties on baking sheet. Bake for 12 minutes at 350 F. Alternately, fry patties in a small amount of oil.
