How to make it

  • Making the Dough

  • Sift dry ingredients together in a medium bowl.
  • Using an electric mixer, begin with mixing the shortening until fluffy.
  • Add sugar until blended. Add eggs in one at a time until mixed.
  • Mix in molasses and beat on high speed until well blended.
  • Spoon in the dry ingredients.
  • Portion dough into smaller sections and wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm enough to roll (3-6 hours, or overnight).
  • Making the Template

  • Using three sheets of paper. See Photo This photo is the larger version for individual sizes. This batch will make 3 houses.
  • Side - Rectangle 17 cm x 12 cm
  • Roof - Rectangle 25 cm x 12.5 cm See Photo
  • Front and Back (Gable) Side - (rectangle with triangle on top) - Base 12 cm, sides 12 cm, from top of side to peak 8.5 cm. See Photo
  • Assembly & Baking

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using only one of the refrigerated portions of the dough as needed. Roll out on a floured surface. Roll dough to 3/8 inch thickness. Using your templates (making sure to cut out two sections of each piece). Remember to add a door to one of the gabled sides and windows to the sides (if you like) See Photo. Carefully place the cut out pieces onto parchment paper lined cookie sheets. Bake for 25 minutes (15 minutes if using the smaller pattern) and allow to fully cool on cooling rack before handling.
  • Once completely cooled use Royal Icing to assemble. See Photo
