Braised Red Cabbage

- 1/4 cup peanut oil shopping list
- 1 Large red onion, sliced shopping list
- 1 Cup brown sugar shopping list
- 3 Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced shopping list
- 1/2 cup red wine vinegar shopping list
- 2 cups red wine shopping list
- 2 cups orange juice shopping list
- 2 cinnamon stick shopping list
- 1 teaspoon dry ginger shopping list
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste shopping list
- 4 pounds red cabbage, cut into julienne shopping list
How to make it
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Heat a heavy dutch oven over medium high heat. Add peanut oil. Saute the red onion until translucent.
- Add sliced apples. Sprinkle in brown sugar and cook for about 5 minutes until it starts to caramelize. De glaze with the red wine vinegar. Bring to a boil. Add red wine and orange juice, cinnamon stick, ginger powder, salt and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add red cabbage and continue to cook for about 10 minutes on top of the stove. Cover cabbage with pot cover and cook in 350 degree oven until creamy or the texture you desire. I,ll cook this in the oven as much as 2 hours or more sometimes.Remove taste, and adjust with seasoning, if necessary.
