How to make it

  • Prep your stuff: Slice, dice, cube, etc Put these in small bowls in the order they will be used. See Photo
  • 1. Put oil into a small skillet to heat.
  • 2. Add onions and bacon, sauté until onions are tender.
  • 3. Add garlic and sauté 30 seconds more.
  • 4. Add the stew beef and sear, browning well.
  • 5. Add the Worcestershire sauce.
  • 6. Pour 1 liter of stock and the Guinness into your crock pot (OR stew pot) and set to low. See Photo
  • 7. Add prepared vegetables.
  • 8. Add barley, herbs and sugar and mix well.
  • 9. Add skillet mixture to pot.
  • 10. Salt and FG pepper to taste.
  • 11. Cover the contents of the crock/pot with more chicken, or veggie, stock.
  • 12. Cook 3 to 5 hours at low heat on the stove top/5 to 7 in a low crock pot.
  • 13. Close to serving time check the consistency.
  • 14. Thicken with cornstarch and water, as desired.
  • 15. Put on your green apron, or shirt, and serve. See Photo
