How to make it

  • Here are a few (or a lot) of the helpful comments from her blog:
  • *Can also be used in hair as well.
  • * How long does this stay fresh in the jar?
  • 1.Coconut oil is generally very stable and is commonly considered to have about a 24 month shelf-life. Whipped coconut oil should stay fresh in a sealed container for this amount of time as well.
  • *What temperature is optimal for whipping?
  • 1.Coconut oil is best when whipped from a solid state, so a temperature anywhere above the melting point (78-80 degrees) should work well for this project.
  • 2.you need to only whip it when it's cold, if it warms up it turns to liquid. (so no incorporation of air)
  • *Does whipping the coconut oil change the nature of any of its properties?
  • 1.Whipping the coconut oil simply incorporates air to give it a lighter texture. While making it easier to apply, this technique does not alter the beneficial nutrient profile and leaves the healing lauric acid intact.
  • *What brand of Vitamin E do you use?
  • 1.The one that I usually get from Mountain Rose Herbs has been recently out of stock. When finding a good Vitamin E oil, it is important to check that it is non-GMO verified and not derived from soybean oil. Seeking out an organic variety is a good first step in meeting this criteria.
  • *I personally use it every day after cleaning my teeth, I swish some around in my mouth and its good at absorbing stains and also helps reduce the amount of plaque that can stick to your teeth. My massage therapist also uses coconut oil which I find better than a lot of oils used out there.
  • *I bought an equal amount of shea butter and whipped that (in a solid, yet crumble state) into the coconut oil. I got a pretty fluffy consistency. The shea butter (having not been melted) was a little grainy, but with minimal rubbing it spread nicely on my skin. It stayed nice even in 85 degrees. So if shea butter is an option I recommend it. I bought mine at a health food store.
  • *I already put on coconut oil all over my body after my morning shower. I have a small pump bottle which I fill with the oil (solid). Before I go in to the shower, I fill a large glass with hot tap water, put in the pump bottle and cover. When I get out of the shower, the oil has been melted so I can pump it out. I've been doing this for 7 or 8 years. The oil conditions my skin very nicely. As a matter of fact, I've been using the same procedure (without the shower) to use the oil on my massage clients for several years now. I refuse to "nuke" it. NOTE: NUKING anything kills its health benefits.
  • 1.On what evidence are you basing the claim that microwaving coconut oil will quickly destroy it's balance? Not that that statement really means anything, but its well-established that microwaving does not change nutritional content. The only thing that would denature the fats in oil is heating it past its smoke point, which for coconut oil is 350 degrees, and even then this would only affect the nutritional content if it were being ingested, not applied.
  • *I dont whip mine but i mix it with sheabutter, jojoba, argan, a bit of tea tree and lavender oils. Use it head (hair) to toe. Its just wonderful!!
  • *We switched to coconut oil a couple weeks ago and I am loving that it has so many uses. I rub it on my feet, use it for acne.
  • *Good recipe, Coconut oil can used a skin softener, lip gel, makeup remover, anti aging cream
  • *As for olive oil, it too is beneficial for the skin- only in different ways. It contains fatty acids and antioxidants, but lacks the antimicrobial properties and the specific medium chain fatty acids that make coconut oil so easily absorbed. There is certainly nothing wrong with using olive oil, but some people find do find it a lot more greasy to rub in and unstable as far as shelf life goes.*Because coconut oil is just so rich in fatty acid content, it is probably too dense to put in a conventional lotion bottle. It comes out more like a body butter, and is better kept in a jar. If you blend coconut oil with other oils, you may be able to create something that has more of a lotion consistency
  • *Liquid coconut oil always baffled me. Turns out that they process it using techniques such as "fractioning" in which molecular bonds are destroyed and then re-assembled in a different way wherein they are not as tightly packed and can remain a shelf-stable liquid. Although it makes for a convenient liquid oil, this process damages the structure of the fatty acids and destroys the complimentary nutrients that make coconut oil so beneficial.
  • *Friend told me I shouldn't use coconut oil on my face because it will clog my pores. I used it for over a year.
  • 1.Did it clog your pores in that year? It hasn't clogged mine and I've been using it on my skin for over a decade.
  • 2.I have been using goat milk soap to cleanse my face, followed by extra virgin coconut oil as a moisturizer, for about eight months, and my skin has never felt better! I even think it looks healthier and younger! Love it!
  • *Can I add raw honey to the coconut lotion recipe? I love the smell of honey.
  • Honey is wonderful and can also be very healing to the skin. I would start by adding a tablespoon or so and modifying based on your preferences.
  • *I have avacado oil that is in a hardend state used for lotions. could i use that instead of vit E oil? im looking for a lotion for my face to help with dermititis and roscea. any suggestions?
  • 1.Avocado oil is highly nourishing for the skin (both when consumed and applied topically). It would be very soothing used in combination with the coconut in this recipe for healing irritated skin. Be careful with the addition of essential oils for the face, as scents that are too strong will be bothersome to the eyes.
  • *I discovered that using coconut oil in my baby's diaper area, particularly after she's pooped and been cleaned up eliminates all the residual smell. No wipes I used have the same effect. My baby's behind smells only of...coconut oil. I use a small amount and make sure it is well absorbed in the skin..and so no problems with staining.
  • *To infuse the oil, I must put the herbs into the coconut oil in mason jars, put the lids on and leave in a water bath in my crock pot for three days, after which I strain out the herbs. After heating the oil this way, it will not solidify at room temperature anymore. It stays liquid. (unless I put it in the refrigerator, then it is way too hard to use) My question is this: I would like to add additional coconut extract of some kind to enhance the coconut aroma of the massage oil. Do you think this will work and maintain the benefits of the coconut oil? And: can you recommend a coconut extract that is strong enough to make the oil smell strongly of coconut?
  • 1.Coconut Scent- Coconut oil should already have a relatively strong aroma, although this does vary significantly by brand. If you are looking to enhance it, I would recommend using a "coconut flavor" or "coconut extract". These can be found in the baking section of some specialty grocery stores and online. I know that the Frontier company offers an alcohol-free version that may work well for you.
  • *I used my hand blender (Braun) and the result is just perfect! It doesn't take more than 2 minutes. I didn't add any vitamin E or essential oils. I wasn't using coconut oil for my body because of the texture... but this creamy paste is irresistible!
  • *I have melted bees wax, added coconut oil, lemon grass and essential oils to get a nice lotion. It doesn't take much of the bees wax to make it stay solid even in warm locations. Just play around with it.
  • *How much tea tree oil can I add if I want to add it to this mixture?
  • 1. I would start with just a few drops of tea tree oil and work up from there. Tea tree oil can be very strong depending on how it is extracted, so I always add it in slowly!
  • *I rub coconut oil on my baby after his bath. He smells so good when I put him to bed. The problem is some coconut oil residue gets on his pajamas and after washing them a few times, they start to smell like rancid oil. Any tips on how to "strip" the oil off clothing?
  • 1.(we have 5 in our family, 3 boys) I use 1C ammonia added to the "bleach" area while the tub is filling. It gets my clothes sparkling clean removing grass, dirt, blood, oil...you name it. I have a soak cycle, which I use to ensure saturation. It also disinfect everything and leaves my clothes with a neutral smell.
  • 2.Although the oils stains can be tough, there are a few tricks that I use. Spritz the fabric so it is a bit wet and sprinkle some baking soda on the spot (or more generally as needed), letting it soak for 5-10 minutes, then scrap it off using some kind of stiff edge like a piece of cardstock or credit card. Next use a wet sponge lathered in dish soap to scrub the stained area- you can even use an old toothbrush to work it into the fibers for a stubborn stain in a certain spot. Wash clothing on the highest possible setting that the fabric will tolerate. This should help with the smell and is also a great non-toxic trick for any type of stain with cooking oil!
  • 3.I would say to back off on how much coconut oil she uses. 1. right after bath while skin is still wet, massage a very small amount of extra virgin coconut oil (should smell like coconut and not an artificial added smell! read the label) working into skin folds and moving outward, apply the smallest amount possible and work completely into skin. Make sure skin is completely dry before diapering and clothing your baby. There should not be so much oil that there is build up on clothing. I use coconut oil and have had no problem at all removing coconut oil from fabric. I do use an unscented enzyme laundry product.
