How to make it

  • Stir shortening to soften. Gradually add 1 cup of the sugar, creaming together till light. Add salt and vanilla. Combine 1/3 cup cold water and cocoa; beat into creamed mixture. Add flour alternately with 1 cup cold water; beat after each addition. Beat egg whites till soft peaks form; gradually add ¾ cup sugar, beating till stiff peaks form. Fold into batter. Dissolve soda in 1/3 cup cold water; add to batter; mix well. Bake in 2 paper-lined 9 x 1½-inch round pan in a 350° F oven for 30 minutes or till done.
