How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 450*
  • Melt shortening in a cast iron skillet (I use a 12" one).
  • Sift dry ingredients into bowl. Add buttermilk and egg. Pour into the skillet of melted shortening and mix.
  • Bake 20-25 minutes, cornbread will be golden brown on top.
