Grandma Monties Sour Dinner Recipe

Grandma Monties Sour Dinner Recipe
This is my German great-grandmother's recipe. She had 15 children and I am sure she had to stretch a meal to feed them all. There are no quantities on the recipe.. Use your own judgement. I make this frequently.

Ingredients
  • Fresh (frozen can be used) cut yellow beans, cooked
  • carrots, peeled and cut into chunks
  • celery, sliced
  • onion, coarsely chopped
  • cooked ham, diced
  • all-purpose flour
  • water
  • cider vinegar

Directions
  1. First, in Dutch oven, cook carrots, potatoes, celery and onion in enough water to cover by an inch until vegetables are almost tender.
  2. Add ham and cook until potatoes are tender.
  3. Add yellow beans (you should have more beans than any other vegetable.)
  4. Add vinegar to taste. The broth should be on the "sour" side.
  5. Make a slurry of flour and water.
  6. Add enough slurry to broth to thicken to taste.
  7. Serve as a soup with crusty bread.
