How to make it

  • In a bowl, beat egg whites and salt until stiff, but not dry.
  • Gradually beat in sugar.
  • Add vanilla and vinegar alternately and beat about 5 minutes.
  • Grease a 10-inch spring pan with shortening, not butter.
  • Heap the batter into the center of pan.
  • Bake at 350° for 1-1/2 hours.
  • Turn off oven and allow cake to cool in oven.
  • The center of the cake should fall. If it doesn't, GENTLY push down.
  • Fill with 1/2 pint of whipped cream.
  • When ready to serve, top with sliced strawberries.
