Date Bread With Caramelsauce Recipe
The recipe is enough for 3 medium sized loaves. Great at teatime.

Ingredients
  • Bread:
  • 10 ml bicarbonate of soda (2 teaspoons)
  • 500 ml dates, finely chopped (300 g) (2 cups)
  • 500 ml boiling water (2 cups)
  • 500 ml very fine white sugar (2 cups)
  • 150 ml margarine 9(1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons)
  • 2 eggs
  • 750 ml cake flour (3 cups)
  • 10 ml baking soda (2 teaspoons)
  • pinch of salt
  • 10 ml vanilla essence (2 teaspoons)
  • Sauce:
  • 250 ml soft brown sugar (1 cup)
  • 250 ml milk (1 cup)
  • 100 ml margarine (1/2 cup)
  • 50 ml Brandy (1/4 cup)

Directions
  1. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over dates.
  2. Pour in the boiling water.
  3. Mix and let stand.
  4. Beat the margarine and sugar well.
  5. Beat the eggs into the sugar mixture.
  6. Mix dry ingredients.
  7. Sift the dry ingredients over sugar mixture.
  8. Put in the vanilla.
  9. Mix the date mixture in.
  10. Mix well together.
  11. Bake in an oven of 180 degrees C (360 degrees /f)for 60 minutes.
  12. Syrup.
  13. Bring everything to the boil for 5 minutes.
  14. Pour in Brandy.
  15. Turn bread out on a plate.
  16. Pour syrup over.
  17. Serve when it has cooled down.
