- 1 3/4 cups cornmeal shopping list
- 1/4 cup flour shopping list
- 2 tsp. baking powder shopping list
- 1 tsp. salt shopping list
- 1 tsp. baking soda shopping list
- 1/2 tsp. black pepper shopping list
- 1 large onion finely chopped shopping list
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk or beer shopping list
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten shopping list
- vegetable oil for frying shopping list
How to make it
- Combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder and soda.
- Add salt and pepper.
- Mix in onion, then stir in butterrmilk or beer and beaten eggs.
- Pour oil 1/2" deep in heavy skillet. Heat oil til dough dropped from spoon sizzles immediately.
- Drop dough by spoonsful into hot oil.
- Cook over med. heat until puffed and lightly browned on one side, then turn and cook til browned on the other side.
- Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Cook remaining hushpuppies.
