Ingredients

How to make it

  • In a small saucepan, add syrup, 1 Tbsp of orange zest, 1 tsp of lemon zest and the 4 Tbsp of orange juice
  • Simmer for at least 15 minutes - do not allow the syrup to boil or burn. You want the syrup to absorb the orange flavour, but not to burn.
  • Add the liquor, stir, and take the pan off the heat
  • Strain the mixture into a serving jug.
  • In a bowl, add the eggs, milk, salt and the remainder of the orange zest.
  • Beat the eggs until well mixed.
  • Heat your frying pan to a medium temperature and add in butter and oil (the oil is important to stop the butter from burning and turning brown).
  • Dip the slices of French bread into the egg mixture and fry in the saute pan on medium heat turning until both sides are nicely golden brown.
  • Drain for a moment on paper towels to remove any excess oil.
  • Serve french toast sprinkled with a dusting of powdered sugar.
  • Add a dollop of mascarpone cheese to each serving, and drizzle with orange syrup.
