ORIGINAL SLOPPY JOES This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Buckley Estate in Garland, Texas in 1994.

Ingredients
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • 1 white onion chopped
  • 1 green pepper chopped
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard

Directions
  1. Sauté onion and green pepper in skillet until tender.
  2. Add ground beef and brown well.
  3. Drain well then add remaining ingredients and simmer covered for 30 minutes.
  4. Serve on buns.

Well, as I remember it, and seeing it in a magazine for the first time as a kid, and we made it. Do not remember the green pepper, but that would not be a bad addition...too much sugar, brown the beef first so it developes that wonderful browned flavor, drain and then add the veggies let them sweat and develop their own sugars slowly...no need to rush, it will taste better the longer you take to prepare it.
I use bison, I grind myslef in all ground beef recipes. Much better for you....
