How to make it
- FOR CAKE:
- The process of these ingredients may sound a bit odd, but following them in this order is a must.
- Cream shortening & sugar until light & fluffy.
- Add eggs & BEAT WELL. (approximately 4-5 min.)
- Stir cocoa & red coloring together.
- Add to creamed mixture & BEAT WELL. (again, 4-5 min.)
- Put salt into buttermilk and add to creamed mixture alternately with flour.
- Beat after each addition, but not as long as before. (Overbeating here will toughen the cake.)
- Mix in vanilla.
- Dissolve baking soda in 1T. of hot water & add to mixture.
- Add vinegar to mixture.
- Divide evenly between 2 greased & floured cake pans.
- Bake 350F for 30 min.
- FOR FROSTING:
- Cook flour & milk until thick stirring constantly.
- Cool completely. Very important!
- Cream sugar, butter & vanilla until fluffy.
- Add flour mixture to creamed mixure & BEAT WELL. (The mixture may look as if it is seperating before it gets to the desired creamy stage.)
- ASSEMBLY:
- Split each cake layer into two layers each.
- Fill layers & ice entire cake.
- If served in the summertime:
- Keep cake in a cool place until ready to serve.
- Before serving bring cake to room temperature.
- ENJOY!

A question about the icing ingredients. Is the sugar granulated or powdered?

This cake is FABULOUS!!! I made it for a birthday and it was definitely the hit! Thanks for the recipe - we will be making it again.
The frosting, on the other hand, didn't turn out well for us. We needed to use a different recipe.cutietheduck in Siloam Springs loved it
