INDONESIAN BEEF This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Boyd Estate in Dallas, Texas in 1987.

Ingredients
  • 1 pound flank steak thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy
  • 2 tablespoons tamarind liquid
  • 1 white onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon Laos powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sambal ulek
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon shrimp paste
  • 2 tablespoons peanut oil
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 3 curry leaves
  • 1 stalk lemon grass
  • 2 teaspoons dark brown sugar
  • Peanut Sauce:
  • 1 cup smooth peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice wine
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons Chinese vinegar
  • 1/4 cup sesame oil
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1 teaspoon chili paste
  • 3 tablespoons chicken broth

Directions
  1. Blend together the first four ingredients into a smooth paste then mix in the next four ingredients.
  2. Heat oil and fry paste until it turns brown then add meat and fry one minute.
  3. Add remaining ingredients and simmer until sauce is very thick.
  4. Thread meat on skewers and broil until well browned.
  5. Serve with peanut sauce.
  6. To make peanut sauce blend all ingredients until smooth.
