Barbecue Beans Recipe

Barbecue Beans Recipe
I boil the beans in the morning and cook all afternoon for dinner at night. The smoky ham hock and liquid smoke add wonderful flavor to these beans and the sauce is what my younger sister came up years ago as her bbq sauce. I use it on meatloaf

Ingredients
  • 1 cup navy beans
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 1 onion, peeled and chopped
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • 1 small ham hock
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbs grainy mustard
  • 3/4cup brown sugar
  • water to cover beans

Directions
  1. I quick boil the beans for about 5 minutes or so. Drain the beans and add more water to cover. Never salt the beans-it will make them tough. If you want salt, do it after they are cooked. Add the celery and onion, and the ham hock. Cook with a lid on for about 1 hour. Add more water as needed. Add the ketchup, mustard, brown sugar and liquid smoke to the beans. Cook over low heat until the beans are soft and the meat fall from the ham hock. Take the ham out and let cool slightly. Remove the lid from the beans and cook over low heat. Take all fat and bone from the hock and return shreds of the ham back to the beans and serve.
