Indian comfort food that is so easy to make... this curry dish uses ground beef. The base is made with everyday ingredients like milk, yogurt and plenty of spices. Think shepherd's pie, but without the crust. Serve over rice or with naan.

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 3 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1" x 1" piece of grated ginger
  • 2 serrano peppers, finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 2 1/2 tsp coriander
  • 2 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/3 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup baby peas

Directions
  1. Cook ground beef in pan. Drain.
  2. Cook potatoes in half of oil until cooked, about 7 minutes. Remove.
  3. Heat half of oil over moderate heat. Add onions and cook until clear, for about 3 minutes. Stir garlic and ginger, cook 1 minute. Add cooked beef. Add serrano peppers, coriander, cumin, cinnamon & salt. Stir 1 min.
  4. Stir in potatoes, yogurt and milk. Bring to a boil.
  5. Cover pan. Reduce heat, simmer for 20 minutes. Uncover and cook 5 minutes longer. Stir in peas & remaining 1/2 tsp salt. Stir until peas are undone, about 2 minutes.
  6. Serve over rice or couscous.

This looks good...but I am a little confused with the quantity of ground beef. Doe 1 1/2 refers to lbs or kgs. Please clarify. Thanks
