Sourdough Biscuits

- Sourdough Starter: shopping list
- 1 package dry yeast shopping list
- 2 cups warm water (105-degrees to 115-degrees) shopping list
- 2 cups all-purpose flour shopping list
- 1 Tablespoon sugar shopping list
- Sourdough Biscuits: shopping list
- 3 cups all-purpose flour shopping list
- 1 Tablespoon baking powder shopping list
- 1 Tablespoon sugar shopping list
- 3/4 teaspoon salt shopping list
- 2 Tablespoons shortening shopping list
- 2 1/2 cups prepared sourdough starter (at room temperature) shopping list
- 3 Tablespoons butter, melted shopping list
How to make it
- Sourdough Starter:
- Dissolve yeast in warm water; let stand 5 minutes.
- Combine flour and sugar in a medium-sized non-metal bowl; mix well.
- Gradually stir in yeast mixture.
- Cover loosely with plastic wrap or cheesecloth, and let stand in a warm place (80 degrees to 85 degrees) for 10 to 12 hours.
- Yield: About 2 1/2 cups.
- Sourdough Biscuits:
- Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt; stir well.
- Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.
- Add Sourdough Starter; stir until moistened.
- Turn out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead 10 to 12 times.
- Shape dough into 1 1/2 inch balls and place into a well-greased 13- x 9- x 2-inch baking pan.
- Brush tops of biscuits with melted butter.
- Cover and let rise 1 hour and 45 minutes or until doubled in bulk.
- Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Yield: 2 dozen.
