How to make it

  • Cream shortening with sugar thoroughly.
  • Blend in the carrots, potatoes, raisins, dates, nuts, and vanilla.
  • Dissolve the baking soda in the hot water, and add to the carrots.
  • Sift flour, measure 1 1/4c, and then sift with salt.
  • Stir flour into creamed mix.
  • Spoon everything into a greased 2-qt mold, and steam for 2 hours.

    Add 1/2 teaspoon each of nutmeg, cloves and allspice and 1 teaspoon each of cinnimon and ginger. other wise sounds great.
