How to make it

  • Cream crisco and sugar
  • Add eggs, vanilla and salt
  • Stir in buttermilk
  • Sift together flour, cocoa, and salt and add to the batter
  • Mix vinegar and baking soda together and fold into the batter
  • Pour into three 9" greased and floured cake pans
  • Bake at 300* for 30 minutes
  • Remove from oven and let cool
  • While cake is cooling, cook milk, salt and flour until it thickens. Set aside to cool
  • Beat crisco, sugar, margarine, and vanilla until fluffy. Blend with the first mix when cool
  • Spread between the layers, down the sides, and across the top
  • Sprinkle coconut over the whole cake =OPTIONAL=
