How to make it

  • Cut vanilla bean open then cut in half.
  • Pour sugar in a plastic container with tight fitting (air thight) lid.
  • Stick vanilla beans into sugar and close lid; shake.
  • Let stand for about 8-10 days, shaking once in a while.
  • The sugar will absorb the flavor of the vanilla bean.
  • Refill the sugar several times, the flavor of the vanilla bean will last quite a while and for some refills.
  • Tip: Don't discard vanilla beans you used in another recipe, just let them dry thoroughly (e.g. if you used them to flavor milk) and then use it to make vanilla sugar.
