How to make it

  • Melt the margarine in a wide skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the turnips and saute until they begin to brown, about 7 minutes.
  • When the leeks begin to soften, add the apples and cook for 2 minutes longer.
  • Add the wine and cook until the liquid is reduced to 2 tablespoons.
  • Add 1/2 cup of water, sugar, thyme, salt and pepper and simmer until the turnips are nearly soft, about 5 or 10 minutes longer.
  • Remove them to a bowl with a slotted spoon.
  • Turn the liquid to high and reduce the liquid until it is thick enough to coat the vegetables. Adjust the seasonings.
